dig into it 004: focus reset

from the heart:

My goal has always been to create a space of light and safety really in everything I do, but especially here. To share with you and inspire you and to be a soft landing in what can be a hard world. I’d be remiss however if I didn’t speak from my heart as I am, after all, a whole person and not just a brand.

The truth is, the world is heavy and the news cycle has my heart broken. I’m deeply empathetic and despite my best efforts to maintain a balance, some days I can’t help that the collective pain of the world robs me of my peace and focus. It’s not just the lives that have been lost or shattered, the violence constantly being perpetrated against women and marginalized groups, it’s also the response to these events that I see that celebrate and make a mockery of it all. How cold and callous and emboldened hate has become. I feel we are caught in this perpetual cycle that often highlights the worst of humanity. The silver lining that I cling to is that I truly believe the goodness of people outweighs the bad.

I encourage you this year to turn off the news, get off of social media, and get out in your community. Engage in thoughtful discussion with people who don’t look, think, or believe like you (my personal boundary here is if your core beliefs are dehumanizing). Make it a point to volunteer your time or resources to those struggling. Protect your neighbor. Be vulnerable and imperfect, share your wins and losses, your success and failures, and open your heart to others sharing theirs. Seek to see the humanity in someone and hope that they can see yours back and maybe this way we can work towards building a kinder world. We can choose to walk a different path rather than succumbing to pain and the idea that the hate of the world has always been and will never change.

Lastly, get your hands in the dirt. Touch grass. Smell the flowers and notice all of the wonderful, tiny things happening around you. Sit in the quiet spaces of your garden and be reminded that we are all apart of something intertwined and magnificent.

Wishing you the best and most beautiful of what life has to offer, always!

This week at garden party:

So many things on my to-do list this week!

It’s time for me to start getting my native perennial seeds going. Many of them require a period of cold stratification to germinate so now is the perfect time to pop them in trays outside and let nature do its thing for a bit.

I’m also finalizing my Summer and Fall crop list and this year’s workshop schedules. After a discussion with my peer group, I’ve decided to scale back on the number of summer crops I’ll be growing and to spend the bulk of my energy on growing blooms in Spring and Fall. There are several factors driving this decision with some of the main being that our intense summers increase our water usage, the heat contributes to higher pest and disease pressure, and our customer base is spending more time traveling, etc. Please don’t fret however if you know you will need summer blooms! I still plan to have a beautiful, unique selection of heat loving flowers for you!

field focus:

Field Focus is where I share practical insights, tips, and creative ideas related to gardening and lifestyle.

January is the perfect time to check off a few items in preparation for Spring!

  1. Audit your seeds and order new ones as needed. March 29th is our last projected frost date, which means we are fast approaching our window to start our seeds!

  2. Soil Test and Amend as needed.

  3. Prune your hydrangeas and other dormant shrubs and trees.

HIGHLIGHTS + headaches:

From the joys, the eye-rolls, the current vibes, what I’m loving, or totally over, this section is a playful snapshot of life’s ups, downs, and everything in between.

  1. Grateful For:
Cooler temperatures for the cool flowers.

  2. Loving Right Now:
Building out my 2026 Mood board, workshop planning, Award Season! I’ve also been soaking in as much art as gardening and farming lately and I cannot get enough of Szilveszter Makó’s work and this modern surrealist movement that is unfolding.

  3. Listening To:
    Podcast: No-Till Flowers
    Music: Djo

  4. Watching:
Finished Heated Rivalry and have not loved, cried, felt more joy for a show in a minute. The healthy masculinity, vulnerability, allyship is 10/10. I also just restarted Ted Lasso because it’s in my comfort show rotation and god I forgot how funny and wholesome it is. Bringing me so much joy!

  5. Reading:

The Book of Alchemy: A Creative Practice for an Inspired Life by Suleika Joauad

  6. Craving:
Do yourself a favor and buy Trader Joe’s caramelized onion and goat cheese ravioli. Pair with a medium to medium rare steak and drizzle with garlic confit. Chefs Kiss

  7. Learning:
I’ve been really diving in on homemade garden amendments and foliar sprays. It’s really satisfying my need for science experiments and reminiscent of those days making pretend “soups and potions” outside as a kid. I’m telling you, the kids know what’s up. Ancestral knowledge perhaps?

  8. Wishing For:
Peace and sure-footedness as crops begin to produce. Still speaking into existence my Unicorn property.

  9. Current Vibe:
Focused. Standing firm in my purpose.
